Synonyms

A Synonym is a word which is almost exactly the same in meaning as another word.
For example, student and pupil are synonyms.
Note: Compare this with antonyms, which are words of opposite meanings.
In English, there are no perfect synonyms. Two words may be very similar and appear identical in meaning, but they will be used in slightly different contexts or have a very subtle difference in meaning or association.
In the case above, for example, a concordance shows that pupils tend to be younger while students tend to be older.
A collection of synonyms can be found in a Thesaurus. The most famous thesaurus is arguably Roget's Thesaurus which collects sysnonyms and classifies them both alphabetically but also by concept.
