Rebels in Somalia have banned the use of English in schools, insisting that only Arabic is used; lessons have been replaced with Islamic studies. (from the EL Gazette)

I can see why; English is not simply a tool of communication but it also represents a very Western (US/UK) political lifestyle. Of course some people will want to see rid of it.

The downside, of course, is that to have any kind of say in the world or receive any kind of attention on the world stage one pretty well must use English.

Have the rebels shot themselves in the foot?
