Participles
A Participle is a verb form. In English there are two participles
The Present Participle
The present participle ends in -ing
- walking
- talking
- eating
- sleeping
We use the present particple to form the Continuous Tenses:
He is sleeping.
They were laughing.
It can also be used as an adjective or a noun in some cases.
The Past Participle
The past participle usually ends in -ed
- walked
- talked
Irregular verbs have different irregular formations
- ate
- slept
The past particple is used to form the Perfect Tenses:
We have walked these hills many times.
He has slept for 18 hours!
The past participle can sometimes be used as a noun.
