Malaysia - TEFL in Malaysia
Malaysia offers many employment opportunities to English teachers. The capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur and this is where the jobs are.
Face to face interviews are essential and you should call at as many schools, language centers, and colleges as you can find as soon as you land in the country. Most schools and language centers are well equipped with computer labs and modern facilities. They welcome applicants so don't be afraid to call them up and ask for a chance to come in and talk to them. Don't forget to bring a copy of your resume and dress smartly!
Finding a teaching position takes on average about a month. Local newspapers are a good source of job listings.
Salaries offered to English teachers varied quite al lot and typically range from RM1500 to 6000 ($400 to $1600) per month. The British Council and the international schools are the best payers. Colleges and universities, on the contrary, don't pay much. You will need to make at least RM 2000 to get by but the opportunities are plentiful.
To teach in Malaysia you will need a visa. The application process is fairly straightforward but time-consuming. You are likely to have to wait 3 to 6 months before getting approved by Immigration. During that time, you will be on a Social Visit Pass, and you may have to leave the country and re-enter via Singapore or Thailand if the process takes longer than 3 months.
The Malaysian Government welcomes foreign nationals (with the exception of visitors from Israel, Serbia and Montenegro) to stay in Malaysia on a long term Social Visit Pass under the "MALAYSIA - MY SECOND HOME PROGRAMME" and the duration of stay is for a period of five years with a Multiple Entry Visa. Teachers from countries where English is not the native tongue may also find it difficult to get a permit. For more on this see the official website of the Immigration Department of Malaysia.
