CALL
CALL or Computer Assisted Language Learning is using computers in the classroom to facilitate learning. In general, CALL is used as an adjunct to traditional teaching rather than a replacement (much like video has been used in the past).
In recent years, CALL has developed into more than just a computer program in the class though and the expansion of the internet has meant CALL is part and parcel of most student's learning experience.
CALL can generally be divided into 3 areas:
- the internet - using the internet to browse, practice and study English
- standard software - using programs such as Word or Paint to develop English practice
- CALL specific programs - using specialised software developed to teach English
Types of CALL Functions
Concordancing - this is going through large amounts of text to find patterns. For example, one might use a concordancer to search for the way to test the spelling "rule" of i before e except after c.
